A new weekly broadcast featuring New York City concert recordings from the WQXR Archives, including performances by Simone Dinnerstein, Yuja Wang, and The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra
Launches Today at 9pm on WQXR 105.9 FM
(NEW YORK – April 9, 2020) — Concert halls around the world have shut their doors as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but WQXR — New York City’s sole classical music station — is keeping the flame of live music burning with “New York in Concert,” a new weekly broadcast featuring concerts recorded live at New York City and regional performance venues.
“New York in Concert” kicks off tonight with a performance by the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Xian Zhang and featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Strauss, and Haydn. The series will continue with performances recorded at venues including New York Philharmonic, 92 Street Y, the Naumburg Bandshell, and Miller Theatre at Columbia University, among others. Each broadcast will include interviews with the selected recording’s musicians about the performance. Listeners will also hear about the challenges that classical musicians face in this unprecedented moment.
“New York in Concert” airs every Thursday at 9pm on WQXR 105.9 FM in New York and online at WQXR.org.
“New York in Concert” is a tribute to the vibrant classical music community of New York City and our region,” said Matt Abramovitz, Vice President of Programming, WQXR. “From the largest concert halls to some of the city’s wonderfully intimate performance spaces, the series includes some of our favorite recordings from our archives. We’re delighted to be able to bring our listeners together to share in this music on air and online, while we stay safely apart.”
