I’m excited to announce that Hannah Frishberg will be joining the Culture & Arts desk as a reporter, bringing with her a decade of experience covering New York City with humor and tenacity.
Hannah has a knack for finding the “only in New York” stories that capture why the city can feel simultaneously like a vast metropolis and a small town. She’s profiled the 85-year-old carpenter who’s worked every episode of SNL; investigated why one steakhouse was impossibly hard to get into: because it didn’t exist; and found the woman who had the best rent deal in the city, a $28/month three-bedroom in Greenwich Village. Her reporting into the misuse of funds inside the NYC branch of a popular global church served as the basis for Discovery+’s docuseries Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed.
Hannah doesn’t just know how to make New York work for New Yorkers, she wrote a book on it. She’s the co-author of “Secret New York,” a guide for locals who want to discover hidden bars and clubs across the boroughs.
Previously she was the editor in chief of Brokelyn, a service journalism oriented website for New Yorkers interested in “living big on small change.” She has been a columnist at Curbed, covering NYC street photography, and a staff writer at Brownstoner, where she wrote about real estate and cultural news. Most recently, she was a staff writer for the New York Post.
Hannah’s a fourth generation Brooklynite, and her new role is also a homecoming, as she made her Gothamist debut as a senior at Bard Early College High School, taking readers inside the Red Hook grain elevator. I’m thrilled she’s bringing her talent, versatility and passion for New York City to WNYC / Gothamist. She starts Tuesday, October 15.
