Stephanie Clary joins WNYC as Deputy Editor

Clary, a multiple-award-winning journalist and editor, joins from VICE

Read more in this note from WNYC’s Editor in Chief Audrey Cooper:

July 29, 2021 – Today, we are thrilled to announce that Stephanie Clary will be joining the WNYC newsroom in the newly created role of Deputy Editor.

In Stephanie, we have found a truly impressive journalist with deep experience covering local, national, international and breaking news on both digital and broadcast platforms. She has developed strategies to enhance newsroom innovation and dynamism, and she will bring those skills to WNYC as we continue to grow our audience, expand our reach and produce impactful journalism that improves the lives of people in New York City and our region.

As Deputy Editor, Stephanie will oversee our news coverage, working with the editors in charge of multiplatform desks to align our journalistic priorities. Her first day will be Monday, August 30.

Stephanie’s track record as a leader in a wide range of newsrooms makes her the perfect fit for this role.  A dogged journalist and a strategic thinker, she has managed large teams of journalists, bringing to each job her unique mix of editorial judgement, product expertise, digital skills, and news judgment. Each person I spoke to about Stephanie — and there were many — described her as clear-eyed and unflappable, the sort of person who you want in the middle of any big story, and, as a proponent of the “shine theory,” she puts her team’s success first.

Our team is the next place she wants to bring her talents and skills. As Stephanie said, “I’m thrilled to join a newsroom that’s so essential to our city and region at a time when local news is diminishing in even the largest metropolis. This role is an incredible opportunity to work on both audio and digital at an institution with such a deep and respected legacy, and such committed journalists. I’m excited to be a part of helping to serve more communities with impactful, mission-driven journalism and storytelling.”

Currently Stephanie is a Vice President at VICE, where she leads the editorial, video, and innovation teams, focusing on building company-wide growth initiatives and creating workflows to streamline creative and audience growth efforts. Prior to that she was the Director of Social Publishing at CNN and a Managing Editor at Mic.  As Managing Editor of the NBC start-up “Breaking News,” she oversaw a global team of journalists. She also worked on the product side of that operation, developing new strategies to build and maintain audiences, optimize workflow, and grow external partnerships.

She shares Edward R. Murrow, Webby and Shorty awards with her team at CNN and the 2016 Gannett Foundation Award for Technical Innovation with her team at Breaking News. Stephanie was also part of the Seattle Times team that won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news coverage of the 2009 Lakewood police shooting in Washington.

Stephanie has been a member of the Asian American Journalists Association since 2008 and graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder. She lives with her family in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood.
