We’re thrilled to announce that two talented journalists are joining our newsroom in the coming weeks: Maia Hibbett and Liam Quigley.
Maia will lead the People & Power team, overseeing our coverage of city and state politics as well as the systems and processes that fuel local democracy. This is a pivotal leadership role as we head into the November general election and a mayoral election in 2025, and we’re excited to have Maia at the helm.
Most recently, Maia was the managing editor of the nonprofit New York Focus, where she edited investigative and daily coverage of New York state politics while overseeing day-to-day newsroom operations. Prior to that, she was a politics editor at The Intercept. She has edited a range of stories on topics as diverse as scientific research and international relations. More recently she oversaw stories about the NYPD’s burgeoning public relations team and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie’s relationship with a legislative lobbyist.
Maia lives in Queens. Her first day will be June 10.
Liam is joining the NYC Accountability team as the parks and sanitation reporter, where he will cover key aspects of our city that New Yorkers interact with on a daily basis. Some stories he’ll be covering from the get-go include New York City’s war on rats, the city’s efforts to remove mountains of trash bags from sidewalks, and access to green spaces and public beaches. He’ll cover how the government operates in these spaces and where it falls short.
Liam has been a contributing reporter for the New York Daily News since 2021, where he’s covered breaking news and public safety. His dogged reporting has touched every borough of the city and he’s produced data-driven stories that have exposed disparities in police use-of-force, speeding by school bus operators, and the rising cost of a slice of pizza.
Liam grew up in New York City and lives in Brooklyn. His first day will be June 3.
Please join us in welcoming Maia and Liam to the team.
