Wins 2019 National Murrow Award
(New York, NY – June 18, 2019) – WNYC Studios and The New Yorker are pleased to announce that The New Yorker Radio Hour, a national public radio program and podcast, has won a 2019 National Murrow Award in the Network Radio category for its story “Fleeing Deportation, a Woman Takes Sanctuary in a Church.” The Murrow Awards honor outstanding achievements in broadcast and digital journalism.
The segment was based on a magazine story by New Yorker staff writer Jonathan Blitzer about Amanda Morales Guerra, an undocumented mother on Long Island who fled a deportation order with her three children and found sanctuary from Immigration and Customs Enforcement in an Episcopalian Church associated with the New Sanctuary movement. In an unusual move, Guerra let her community know exactly where she was, so from August, 2017, to the time the story aired, January, 2018, she had not left the church. The story explores her forced seclusion and her dreams of living freely in America.
“The story about Amanda Morales Guerra and her experience during a time of increasingly stringent measures against undocumented immigrants represents the high bar of what The New Yorker Radio Hour strives to do: deeply engaged, deeply informed reporting about how we live in an increasingly uncertain world,” said David Krasnow, Executive Producer. “We are thrilled that this story and Jonathan Blitzer’s excellent work has been recognized with an Edward R. The National Murrow Awards will be presented by the Radio Television Digital News Association at the Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala on Monday, October 14, 2019.
