Opening Night Gala Concert on Wednesday, October 3 to Feature
THE SAN FRANCISCO SYMPHONY, Led by MICHAEL TILSON THOMAS
and Special Performances by Vocal Superstars RENÉE FLEMING & AUDRA McDONALD

(New York, NY – September 12, 2018) – For the eighth season in a row, WQXR and CARNEGIE HALL proudly unite to present “Carnegie Hall Live,” a series of live broadcasts from the 2018-19 season.

The “Carnegie Hall Live” series launches with the Opening Night Gala concert on Wednesday, October 3 at 7PM (ET) featuring the San Francisco Symphony, led by music director and conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, performing arrangements of Gershwin’s Cuban Overture and An American in Paris, as well as Liszt’s Mephisto Waltz No.1. The evening will also feature vocal selections by Gershwin, Rodgers, Villa-Lobos, Stephen Sondheim, and others performed by famed soprano Renée Fleming and six-time Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald.

Other upcoming highlights in the specially-curated series include performances by Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique with an all-Berlioz program; the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra led by music director and conductor Daniel Barenboim; the Mahler Chamber Orchestra with pianist and director Mitsuko Uchida; and a recital with Grammy Award-nominated pianist Yuja Wang and her frequent partner, acclaimed violinist Leonidas Kavakos.

The radio series is co-hosted by WQXR’s Jeff Spurgeon and Clemency Burton-Hill and all concerts will air locally on New York’s only all-classical music station WQXR 105.9 FM, and will be available to digital audiences on-demand at www.wqxr.org, and www.carnegiehall.org. In addition, “Carnegie Hall Live” will be distributed to public radio stations nationwide as a 13-part series starting in Spring 2019.

Throughout the series, WQXR will also produce digital-exclusive content to enhance the listening experience, including live videos, concert highlights and recaps, and backstage photos via social media platforms Instagram and Facebook before, during, and after select broadcasts.

“WQXR’s ‘Carnegie Hall Live’ broadcasts open the doors of America’s most famous concert hall to anyone with a radio, computer or phone,” said Matt Abramovitz, Vice President, Programming at WQXR. “We’re thrilled to continue this partnership with Carnegie Hall, which helps make classical music and the thrill of these world-class performances even more accessible and inspiring.”

“Carnegie Hall’s 2018-2019 season is filled with performances by the finest international artists, offering programs that invite music lovers to engage and enjoy,” said Clive Gillinson, Executive and Artistic Director at Carnegie Hall. “We are delighted to continue our partnership with WQXR and to embark on a new season of ‘Carnegie Hall Live,’ sharing these exceptional musical experiences with listeners around the world.”

This project is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support is provided in part by the Howard Gilman Foundation, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council.
