WNYC Studios and “Science Friday” Announce New Partnership
(New York, NY – January 11, 2018) – WNYC Studios today announced a new partnership with SCIENCE FRIDAY, the acclaimed weekly show that shares entertaining and educational stories about science and technology through its podcast, radio show, videos, and broad digital presence.
Effective January 12, SCIENCE FRIDAY will join the WNYC Studios portfolio, home to innovative, award-winning audio programming including Radiolab, Freakonomics Radio, On the Media, The New Yorker Radio Hour, Snap Judgment, A Piece of Work with Abbi Jacobson, Stay Tuned with Preet, and 2 Dope Queens. As part of the partnership, WNYC Studios and SCIENCE FRIDAY will be partnering on distribution, sponsorship, potential content collaborations, and scaling the SCIENCE FRIDAY live and digital audiences. After January 12, WNYC Studios will lead sponsorship for the SCIENCE FRIDAY podcast and for the documentary-style podcast spinoff, Undiscovered. Beginning April 11, WNYC Studios will lead distribution for the highly lauded national SCIENCE FRIDAY radio show. Host Ira Flatow and the SCIENCE FRIDAY team will continue production from their studios in New York City.
“We’re excited to join forces with WNYC Studios,” said Ira Flatow, Host and Executive Producer, SCIENCE FRIDAY. “Like us, they produce great audio while always looking towards the future.”
“People have been rabid fans of Ira and SCIENCE FRIDAY from the launch of the show, for nearly three decades,” said Dean Cappello, Chief Content Officer, WNYC and Head of WNYC Studios. “There’s something about the way the show brings you back to that feeling of wonder and curiosity, to an appreciation of the way the world works. And given the attack on science itself in recent years, we’re thrilled to partner with SCIENCE FRIDAY to continue raising important and urgent issues.”
Praised as “remarkably conversational and super informative” (Popular Science) and as a show “that’ll help you comprehend the universe” (Thrillist), SCIENCE FRIDAY introduces listeners to top thinkers and the latest ideas across scientific disciplines. Guests have included astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, primatologist Jane Goodall, and inventor Elon Musk.
Now in its 27th year, SCIENCE FRIDAY is heard on nearly 400 public radio stations throughout the United States and internationally. It has received a number of accolades – most recently named a finalist for the Jackson Hole Science Media Award in 2016 – and hosts a series of sold-out live events across the country. The program also regularly produces a variety of multimedia resources, including resources for educators and videos from the frontlines of scientific exploration. SCIENCE FRIDAY is Executive Produced by Ira Flatow, who has been hailed by The New York Times as “one of the most influential communicators of science.” SCIENCE FRIDAY joins WNYC Studios following a successful partnership with Public Radio International.
