“Spooked” to Culminate With Special Halloween Finale
(New York, NY and Oakland, CA – September 7, 2017) – Today, WNYC Studios and the team behind the top storytelling podcast Snap Judgment launch SPOOKED, a new series that is bound to test our understanding of reality.
Hosted by Glynn Washington, the 11-part series features terrifyingly true tales of the supernatural, told by people from across the globe who have lived them – from hauntings along the Mexican-American border to an entire crowd possessed by animal spirits in Indonesia to the mysterious ghost boy in Ireland. The series kicks off with a tragic tale of an orphan and a story of an eerie voice in the woods. Episode 2 includes a retelling of an incident at a roadhouse bar and unveils the secrets that lie inside a haunted mansion.
SPOOKED is delivered in the cinematic, narrative tradition of Snap Judgment and was inspired by the show’s annual Halloween specials. These began in 2010 and eventually spawned an entire “Spooked Week” of supernatural encounters and ghost stories. Washington’s own family lore also played an integral role in shaping the series. His grandmother, who neighbors would visit for advice, had been called a witch. Sometimes, she’d prescribe herbal remedies. Other times, she’d tell people to find a picture, burn it, then bury it in the backyard. Afterward, maybe a cheating husband would return – or maybe he’d never come back at all.
“You discover so much about a person when you ask about their ghosts, their secret stories, their family’s monsters,” said Washington. “You can say that you don’t believe in ghosts, or don’t believe in spirits, but listen to one of our storytellers and I bet you believe them.
Be afraid…and keep the lights on.”
“Snap’s ghost story episodes have become a fan favorite because they reach back to our childhood imaginations and our deepest fears,” said Mark Ristich, Co-Executive Producer. “We’re so excited to present our audience with what they want – an entire series of chilling tales.SPOOKED is a thrill-ride for believers and naysayers alike, but skeptics be warned. The storytelling will convert you.”
SPOOKED premieres today on SpookedPodcast.org, TuneIn, Apple Podcasts, and all other places where podcasts may be downloaded. The series is presented in partnership with TuneIn, and new episodes will be available early on TuneIn throughout the run of the season.
“TuneIn is committed to serving as an outlet for best-in-class storytellers to share their craft. We are thrilled to further strengthen our strategic partnership with WNYC with the launch of SPOOKED,” said TuneIn Chief Content Officer Kevin Straley.
